Crack/Joint Repair

Cracks in asphalt are not unusual. Unfortunately, neither is the eventual deterioration of the surface if those cracks are left unattended. Unsealed cracks allow water to enter and deteriorate the subgrade from the surface. Usually this will result in potholes, pavement deflection and, if left unmaintained, can lead to the eventual loss of the pavement system with no other maintenance rehabilitation options other than a costly complete reconstruction.

Hot rubber crack/joint filler is designed to seal joints and cracks against moisture infiltration into the subgrade. Subgrade moisture is one of the leading causes of pavement failure, therefore, it is essential that asphalt cracking is attended to promptly in order to extend the life of the pavement and save money in the long-run. Typically, it is recommended to fill cracks and joints 1/4 inch wide or greater.

Hutch Paving uses a hot poured, polymer-based material that meets and exceeds MDOT specifications for hot rubber joint repair. The crack is first cleaned using a heat lance (hot compressed air) or mechanical router which widens the cracks/joints allowing enough of the hot rubber to penetrate to the bottom of the joint. The crack sealer is poured in at a temperature of roughly 300°F. This extreme heat causes the sides of the asphalt in the crack to melt and form a strong bond with the crack sealer upon cooling. Due to its high elasticity, crack sealer will have the ability to expand and contract with the thermal movements of the crack. Also, because of its high melting point, it will not track or pick up with vehicle tires under normal conditions.
